PhD Scholarship Opportunity – BioEngineering / Engineering

The IMaR Research Centre at IT Tralee are recruiting for a PhD. position with full scholarship (full fees and an attractive stipend of €18,000 per annum) in the following area; 1 X Clinical Engineering / BioEngineering, specifically analysis and optimisation of the Total Hip Arthoplasty process. This research is funded by Science Foundation Ireland through Lero: The Irish Software Research Centre, in collaboration with the Bon Secours Hospital Group. The closing date for applications for these positions is Friday July 13th 2018. PhD Position [4 Years]: 1 X Clinical Engineering / Bioengineering The ideal candidate with have a Level 8 (Degree (Hons)) in a Clinical, Mechanical or Electronic Engineering or Physics (or a similar disciple), with an understanding of Biomechanical (or similar) systems and/or signal processing techniques. This project intends to investigate and develop a suitable method to objectively detect the correct reaming and seating of a hip joint in-vivo to ensure optimum results for a Total Hip Arthoplasty and minimise the patient’s hospital stay and avoid re-admittance due to problems arising from joint seating. Going forward, advancements in robotic technology will allow many surgical procedures to be undertaken by autonomous systems. A vital component of such a system for THA will be the correct detection of the correct interference fit between the reaming chisel / artificial joint and the out bone. This research project will seek to 1) establish whether audio (vibrational) resonances can be used as a guide to improve outcomes in hip replacement surgery, and 2) to develop the optimum means of analyzing such resonances to determine the moment of optimum seating of the new hip joint. Please submit CV or any questions to Daniel.Riordan@staff.ittralee.ie

Autonomous Systems, Data Analytics and Machine Learning

PhD Position [4 Years]: 3 X Mechanical / Electronic Engineering The ideal candidate with have a Level 8 (Degree (Hons)) in Mechanical or Electronic Engineering or Software Development or Computer Science or Applied Physics (or a similar disciple). This project will investigate the development of autonomous systems that can monitor the surroundings of a machine to provide the reactive / preventative control actions, normally provided by the driver and will review the internal and external data available to an autonomous mobile robotic system, and undertake data analytics and apply machine learning techniques to check for correlations. The project will also involve the development of systems to support remote driving, such as vehicle tracking systems and video distribution systems for detection. Please submit CV or any questions to Joseph.Walsh@staff.ittralee.ie

The AIM 2016 Conference in Canada

Niall O’ Mahony attended the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM) in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The AIM 2016 conference brings together an international community of experts to discuss the state-of-the-art, new research results, perspectives of future developments, and innovative applications relevant to mechatronics, robotics, control, automation, and related areas. The Content presented was Smart Sensors for Process Analytical Technology. The paper presented reviewed the advantages of smart sensors and their role in recent trends in intelligent manufacturing such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) and Industry 4.0. The paper also presented the selection process for a number of smart sensors for a number of industrial applications dealt with in collaborative work with the ProPAT project. These applications included the Mass flowrate, Moisture content and Temperature of powders in milling and pharmaceutical industries and the Moisture content, Viscosity and Colour of polymer resin in a polymerisation process. This paper has been published in IEEEXplore Conference Proceedings for 2015 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM).

IMaR IT Tralee with Industry Partners secure 1/2 million of funding

IMaR, The Intelligent Mechatronics & RFID Technology Gateway at IT Tralee, in collaboration with Kostal Ireland in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick and Astellas Ireland, in Killorglin, Co. Kerry have secured just under 1/2 million euro in research funding for two projects under the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership Program.

Kostal Ireland, employing in excess of 800 people, was established in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick in 1981, opening a second facility in Mallow, Co. Cork in 2001. Kostal Ireland manufactures automotive electronic systems and a range of technologies for end users.

While completing an Innovation feasibility conducted by IMaR researchers for Kostal, a need for the semi- automation of complex tasks within the production line was recognised. The proposed project has secured funding from Enterprise Ireland for the research and development of an innovative flexible robotic system, capable of integrating into the current manufacturing process of an automotive manufacturing plant such as Kostal Ireland with a minimum of set up time and training.

‘While this project will undertake the research, design and development for collaborative robotic systems within the field of automotive component manufacture, the research will begin by investigating the assembly processes for E-Car charging systems,’ explained Dr. Daniel Riordan, Centre Manager at IMaR IT Tralee.

Industry partner Astellas Ireland Co. Ltd provides 324 highly skilled jobs in its facility in Killorglin, Co. Kerry. Established in 1990 to manufacture, package and supply a range of treatments globally, Astellas Ireland is committed to R&D investing 1/5 of its annual sales to innovation.

This Killorglin operation in partnership with IMaR has secured funding to implement an innovative IoT based waste management system incorporating RFID to facilitate environmental monitoring and the consolidation of different pharmaceutical waste. This will fully satisfy legislative and regulatory requirements. The overall plan will comprise of two phases, firstly streamlining the waste tracking and recording processes by using a hardware solution to capture records automatically. These records will then be stored electronically with the option of retrieving data on demand.

Mr. Andrew Shields, Project Investigator describes the second phase: ‘It would provide innovation by creating a data warehouse with data portal and business decision support systems. This would allow analytical techniques to be applied to further increase efficiencies for example by analysing data to forecast waste creation hot spots, patterns and trends and refining production processes to negate wastage.’

“When Astellas contacted IMaR with the issue of tracking the Hazardous waste onsite, we found their approach to the issue very analytical and we are very satisfied with the high professional standard and valuable support provided during the project. We feel that the reliability, dedication, and partnership that IMaR personnel have shown during this project is a credit to the institute,’’ explains Mr. Eamonn Foley, on behalf of Astellas Ireland Co. Ltd.

These projects are a measure of the capabilities within IMaR Technology Gateway at IT Tralee demonstrating how innovative research can benefit Irish industry partners in the development of products and services and overall Irish economic growth.
