It’s been a while but here are some things which have piqued the interest of the IMaR team:

  • blazer.buzz – IoT in the hive

    With fears over declining bee populations worldwide, an Irish start-up Blazer Team believes IoT could provide a solution. Blazer are installing its sensors in a bee hives in order to remotely monitor the health of each bee and compile that data to give an in-depth analysis of the colony’s overall health.
  • How to choose the best connectivity network for your IoT project

    How sensors communicate with the internet is a key aspect when conceiving of a connected project, OpenSensors.io have a handy matrix and of common communication technologies and their pro’s and cons.
  • Deep Learning with TensorFlow and Udacity

    In an attempt to help make deep learning even more accessible Google in collaboration with Udacity have launched a new Deep Learning Course.
  • HaLow World

    The Wi-Fi Alliance have announced a new extension to the Wi-Fi standard, Wi-Fi HaLow (pronounced “halo”) is designed for low-power devices. It’ll travel farther and even do a better job of traveling through walls. Basically, it’s an all around better option for smart home and IoT devices, at least if these claims hold up.

And here are a couple of events happening over the next week in Kerry which we are looking forward to:

  • Cantillon 2016 – Fintech: Disrupting the Financial Landscape”

    The 2016 Cantillon conference takes place in IT Tralee on Thursday next, this year the conference is focusing on BitCoin, Cryptocurrency and the financial services sector.
  • The Irish CĂłdaithe Competition

    The Irish CĂłdaithe Competition is a coding/technology event in Killorglin Community College on Saturday week (27th February). The event is the brainchild of The Irish CĂłdaithe Competition is a competition set up by three 2nd year students from Killorglin Community College including Timothy McGrath with whom IMaR helped to develop an NFC powered mobile app to aid those with visual impairments.

    As you would expect working in research we are constantly coming across interesting new technologies, products, concepts and the like, so we thought it might be interesting to compile a short list of some of the things which caught the eye of the researchers at IMaR during the the week, enjoy #000 !
  • Facebook to open source AI hardware design

    It sure is an exciting time for AI research, following on from Google Open Sourcing their TensorFlow AI software last month, this week Facebook have announced their intentions to open up their AI hardware.
  • Haute-Circuits from Boldport

    In the search for Christmas gifts ? Our electronic engineers came across these stylized PCB’s [pictured above] designed as part of luxury jewelry for Tiffany, Chopard, Cartier, Yurman, and Harry Winston, and featured in Marie Claire. Swoon !
  • Wio Link from Seeed Studios

    Wio Link is an open-source Wi-Fi development board designed to simplify IoT development by virtualizing plug-n-play modules to Web of Things. You can back the project on Kickstarter and get a board for just €9 !
  • RemoteBoot – WiFi Remote Management Module for PCs

    Another interesting KickStarter project, this module allows you to access files on your PC remotely without having the PC on.
  • Standard Access takes Gold at the 2015 BoI Startup Awards

    Congratulation to Standard Access who continued their winning streak at the Bank of Ireland start-up awards recently. IMaR worked with them to develop the initial hardware and software prototype for the product with support from Enterprise Ireland.
  • Small Research can make a difference too.

    And finally a poignant and personal reflection on the importance of research (no mater how small) from Pat Doody, Research Director at IMaR .

Opportunity – Gateway Manager

Gateway Manager

IMaR currently has an opening for a Gateway Manager.

Job Role and Description

The Gateway Manager will drive the industry collaboration activity and commercialization focus of the Gateway. S/he will be responsible for promoting, securing and successfully delivering on the targeted level of industrial collaborative projects. The role will involve managing the industrial engagement process with Irish industry, new business development and working closely with the IMaR team, to develop and implement strategies to further progress IMaR competencies through delivering world class research for industry, as well as driving the basic applied research portfolios for each respective strand within the IMaR Technology Gateway. The IMaR Gateway Manager will report to the Vice President for Research, Development and External Engagement at IT Tralee, Enterprise Ireland and the IMaR Industrial Steering Committee. The post is tenable up to 31st December 2017

Duties

The appointed candidate will be required to:
  • Manage the IMaR Gateway’s research team and research centre facilities to develop opportunities for IMaR by locating, developing, defining, negotiating, and closing business relationships with IMaR Techno logy Gateway Industrial clients;
  • Understand an industry need from a manufacturing perspective and to translate this need as a technology solution to industrial partners;
  • Promote, secure and successfully deliver on the targeted level of industrial collaborative projects;
  • Develop innovative industrial partnerships, integrating the IMaR Gateway, its programs and activities into the fabric of the national research infrastructure, economic landscape and  broader economic development goals and strategies;
  • Provide introductions and networking opportunities to facilitate centre growth and development;
  • Liaise collaboratively with the relevant inputs of IT Tralee support functions e.g. the Offices of the Vice President for Research, Development and External Engagement, Vice President for CorporateAffairs and Enterprise Ireland;
  • Interface with the Institutes Schools and Departments and with appropriate external organisations to facilitate integrated programmes of research, entrepreneurship, technology and knowledg e transfer. In particular, facilitating and ensuring the Institute’s academic staff are integral to and contribute to each research programme under the umbrella of the IMaR Gateway ;
  • Provide detailed reports on Gateway activities and strategic planning upon request to IT Tralee management, Enterprise Ireland and the IMaR Industry Steering Committee;
  • Work closely with the IMaR research team to develop opportunities for IMaR by locating, developing, defining, negotiating, and closing business relationships with IMaR Technology Gateway Industrial clients.

Qualifications and Experience

  • While an honours bachelor’s degree in a Science or Engineering discipline is a minimum requirement, a masters or PhD is desirable.
  • A minimum of 3 – 5 years industry experience in a relevant manufacturing environment
  • An ability to conceptualise and facilitate the development of commercial applications for research.
  • Experience of working on industry focused innovative projects and the ability to translate the IMaR Gateways technical skills into a technology offer that can deliver innovative solutions for industry partners.
  • Extensive knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques and approaches in mechatronics; RFID; scientific papers, patents and market intelligence on same.

Salary

A salary of up to €67,720 p.a. will apply to this post depending on qualifications and experience.

Location

This post is located at IMaR in the Institute of Technology, Tralee however travel will be required to collaborate with Industrial and Academic Partners in the development of research activity.

Standard Access – In Business

Damien Browne CEO of Standard Access spoke to Anna Curtin on Radio Kerry’s In Business program recently where he detailed the trials and tribulations of getting a hardware startup off the ground from Kerry as well as the future plans for the company. Damien spoke about how technical support from IMaR combined with financial support from Enterprise Ireland were key to the development of the product prototype, which allowed the company to not only prove the concept but also secure clients and investment for further development.
