At present I’m 39 years of age. I was born and am now living in Tralee area.
I attended secondary school in Tralee community college. Prior to secondary school, I worked as a deckhand for 3 years on a commercial fishing trawler. I then moved to London, and got work as a labourer with an industrial electrical installation company.
I was offered, and took an electrical installation apprenticeship, and was awarded a City & Guilds qualification in electrical installation.
During this period I worked on the electrical modernisation of Thames Water, (water treatment, & waste water treatment plants) in the London region. This industrial work eventually slowed, so I returned to Ireland and worked on various commercial building projects in the Kerry region. The Recession began, I became unemployed so attended a course in Aberdeen, and received a Compex qualification for (Persons who work on electrical apparatus for use in potentially explosive atmospheres) - (EX01 to EX04). I got this qualification in expectation of Tarbert LNG Gas terminal to commence construction! It didn't. Following work was sporadic, eventually ceased, and after a period of been unemployed it seemed a good time to try and further my education.
In 2009 I applied for, received and enrolled on a 3 year BSc course in Renewable energy & energy management where on completion, decided to do the add on year for an Honours degree in same discipline at IT-Tralee. Prior to graduation I got a nine month internship with a local construction consultancy firm. The Internship had no job guarantee, so I also applied for a Post Graduate research masters position at IT-Tralee, was offered the position with an accompanying bursary, and was delighted to be given the opportunity to progress my education.
